An iceberg the size of Luxembourg has broken off a glacier in Antarctica after being rammed by another giant iceberg. Scientists say it could affect ocean circulation patterns.

The 2,500-square-kilometer iceberg broke off earlier this month from the Mertz Glacier's 160-kilometer floating tongue of ice that sticks out into the Southern Ocean.

Scientists say the shearing off of the ice tongue and the presence of the two icebergs could affect global ocean circulation.

Rob Massom of Antarctic Research Center, said, "It could be detrimental, it could slow down the global ocean circulation."

Scientists also fear it could have a negative impact on local wildlife.

"It could mean that the seals and the wildlife have less open water to access, it's essential that they have open water nearby so they can get food." Said Rob Massom

Scientists are now still studying the existing giant cracks in the ice tongue and monitoring the bumper-car-like collision.
